Please donate

Relief agencies are trying desperately to save lives after Hurricane Katrina, and they need your help. Please give whatever cash you can to the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army or the other reputable charity of your choice. If you have any special skills -- medical or engineering training, for example -- and you want to volunteer your time, you can do so here.

This post is postdated and will remain at the top of the page for at least a week. Please help our fellow Americans in a time of need.

I haven't been able to access the Red Cross website, which is probably a good sign. For any United Methodists out there, or others who are interested, United Methodist Committee on Relief is already responding and can also use donations. These are good people who want to help, not proselytize, and 100% of donations for Katrina relief will go to those in need.

For readers in Birmingham, there is also a need for supplies at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, which has opened a shelter. As of today (9/1) they are housing about 200 people, including around 50 children. Right now, they need pillow, sheets, towels, and diapers. They have plenty of toys and toiletries, which were included in their original request. You can take donations to the BJCC or to City Action Partnership at the corner of 18th Street and 3rd Avenue North.

One more thing: blood banks here in Alabama are always in need, even more so now. For Birmingham residents, if the line at the Red Cross is too long, there is a LifeSouth location in Jefferson Tower at UAB hospital. They are quick, efficient, and very skillful.
