Say anything

With the traditional kickoff of the Christmas shopping season just hours away, former Gov. Don Siegelman today stood in front of Montgomery Mall to compare Gov. Bob Riley to the Grinch for reasons that aren't entirely clear. According to the Montgomery Advertiser, Siegelman also called on Riley to make the day after Thanksgiving a tax holiday, even though "he knows Riley can't do that since tax holidays need legislative approval."

No garden shears were wielded during the press conference.

I think tax holidays are great - Georgia has one before school starts that lets consumers purchase clothes, school supplies, computer equipment and more tax-free. I think there was another one a few weeks ago where you could buy ceiling fans and other energy-saving heating/cooling devices tax-free. Such holidays are great because consumers can buy what they need without state sales taxes being a burden.

The problems with Don's Black Friday tax holiday are that consumers will be buying more non-necessity items (like video games, toys and more) than they would in Georgia's tax free holidays, not to mention that the schools will lose so much money when they won't profit off of one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Sure, the poor families that purchase Christmas gifts that day will save a few dollars, but in the long run, all the money families would save that day would have been better invested in our public schools.

Of course, the wannabe governor could soon come out and propose Lottery Referendum 2: Electric Boogaloo as a way to get back the lost tax dollars from a Black Friday tax holiday, and surely the voters would come out and support that, right?

Don's tax holiday idea is just a pandering gimmick that lets him garner some PR without putting forward any meaningful tax reform idea. Kinda like when he joined Reverend Roy in calling for a halt to annual property tax re-assessments.

Its becoming clear that Dapper Don is not willing to make any serious proposals to move this State forward. Hardly a "New South" type -- just another pandering, demogoguing, vapid, mindless, soulless, political hack.
