I issue no fictional endorsement

Why did a pollster ask more than 5,000 people last month about who should be the next president on The West Wing? I have no idea, but fictional Democratic candidate Matthew Santos has a 16-percentage-point lead over fictional Republican candidate Arnold Vinick among regular watchers of the show.

The pollster adjusted its results for political affiliation, so there's really only one explanation: Ladies love Jimmy Smits.

It seems likely that the core fan base of The West Wing consists of escapists and others who need the alternate reality presented in the show to get through the actual reality presented in the news. A Vinick-supporting majority would have come as a huge surprise.

In order for the show to continue to function therapeutically, Santos must win. Some of us desperately need the hope of governance by thoughtful, smart, wise individuals. The West Wing gives more than a glimmer.

Good theory, 231bridge, and I would venture that it's probably correct these days. Of course, the show began and thrived during the Clinton administration, so I suspect that good writing also played a part. (Pun, sadly, intended.)

For a while, I thought the writers would put Vinick in the White House so they could show what would happen during an "ideal" GOP administration, much as they showed what would happen during an "ideal" Democratic administration with Jed Bartlet.

Though I still think that's a possibility, I now think it's likelier that Santos will win because the potential storylines related to the underdog campaigner, first Hispanic president, etc., are just too good for the writers to resist.

Are you a long-time reader or a first-time visitor? Either way, glad to have you here.

I didn't know TWW had any Republican viewers left until I saw that story.

They haven't said that Santos even has the nomination yet, though you have to assume so. (We'll know in an hour, I guess.) It makes sense to have him win also because if they don't they'll have to turn over the entire cast except for Alda and maybe one token holdover.
