Nah, that couldn't be it

CBS SportsLine columnist Dennis Dodd says the scores in SEC football games have been low in the last few weeks due to "offensive ineptness." Surely it has nothing to do with the fact that six of the NCAA's top 13 scoring defenses through last weekend -- Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee -- belong to SEC teams.

That drives me crazy when they say stuff like that. What about the defensive ineptness of the PAC10?

I'm sorry, but I find a 6-3 Tide-Vols game more exciting than a 47-40 shootout like the UCLA-Cal game. It's like they aren't even trying on defense.

Obviously a happy medium is better, but I'd rather see some tough D than seeing teams throw 65 yard bombs all day and hope they complete more than the other team does.

Agreed. Offensive firepower is flashy and makes for entertaining SportsCenter highlights, but if you check the list of national champions over the last two or three decades, and likely even further back than that, almost all of them had great defenses.
